The field and crap bets are what we call one role bets. They are paid or taken at the end of each role. The field is clearly marked on the table layout with the winning numbers contained within it, and a note that the two pays 2-1 the twelve 3-1 the other numbers 3,4,9,10 and 11 are paid even money though this is not stated. The field bets you can place and retrieve yourself however the crap bets are given to the dealer and placed by the stickman. The layout below is American and the odds differ slightly in the UK crap bets. Below the odds are two and twelve 30-1,three and eleven 15-1 the any crap bet pays 8-1.In the UK the odds are 33-1 and 16-1 respectively the any crap bet pays 7.5-1.

Many players take these bets as an insurance bet on the first roll of a dice incase they don’t role a natural winner 7 or 11. Which is rather odd when you consider the die combinations for making seven, six and eight are three to one and these bets have only one combination. Other’s play them throughout the game merely because of the higher odds but not every role of the dice. However, lets look at the returns a crap role may get you. Using the odds above and a minimum bet of five units of currency. You cover the 2,12 and 3 that’s 3 chips 15 units of currency. If the role is 2 crap you get 30 chips back 150 units of currency two losing bets a profit of 140 units of currency, the same for the 12 crap and if the 3 crap comes up you get 15 chips back 75 units of currency less losing bets 65 units of currency.

Using just one chip on the any crap you get eight back 40 units of currency no losing bets.

The game of craps/dice is a wonderful game with games within the game. It has the most bets and odds of any casino game and the truest odds.

A full size table is about seven to ten feet in length though I have seen half tables operated by one dealer/croupier. But back to the full-sized table operated by three dealer/croupier and a supervisor. In the picture below I have marked the position of the operators. I will start with the supervisor his role is to manage the table:he monitors win/loss usually hourly, if more chips are needed he orders them, checks the payouts made by the dealers and stick man are correct and resolves any minor disputes. The two base dealers/croupier either side of the supervisor take, place and payout winnings and draw in losing bets. The stick man has a very important role they controls the dice and pace of the game among other things. This is the person who calls the roll of the dice, receives and instructs the base dealer/croupier on the payout of “crap bets”http://wp.me/p1RuuH-2G and “hard ways bets” to which players.

There are two what I call contract bets by which I mean no change can be made to these bets until the resolution of the roll. They are the win/pass line and don’t win/don’t pass bar/line.

The first game is the win or pass line. Any bet made here will win on the first roll of the dice if seven or eleven is rolled (hence the call “7-11 come out roll”) if 2,3 or 12 are rolled the bet loses. Any other combination of the dice 4,5,6,8,9,10 become the point. For the bet on the win/pass line to win the same number must be rolled again before a seven is rolled. If the player rolling the dice makes the point then the win/pass line bets will be paid even money.

If the player rolling the dice does not make the point and seven is rolled the bets lose. The two dice are gathered in added to the unused dice in the bowl in front of the stick man. All six dice are passed out to the next player on the left. The player can accept or decline to roll the dice if they accept they can pick any two die from the six offered. This player then becomes the next shooter and must place a minimum bet on either the win/pass line or the don’t win or don’t pass line/bar.

For now I will stay with our pass line player and for the sake of the picture above lets say on their first roll of the dice he had made a point of eight. The stick man invites all players to place more bets on other aspects of the game, but no more contract bets can be made or altered.                                                                                                                                                      Lets start with the bets nearest you in the picture above these are “the odds bets”.These are not contract bets and be called “not working” or “off” on any roll of the dice. The player with the white chips has taken the full odds his chips behind the line are equal to the chips on the line. The player with the blue chips has not taken any odds and the player with the red chips has taken half the odds they have  half the number of chips behind the line bet than they have on the line.

Now let’s say our shooter throws the dice again and rolls an eight the call would be “eight straight back winner”.The base dealers would clear the losing don’t win/don’t pass bets. They would then go and pay the win bets in turn starting with the player nearest them. In the picture this would be the starting with the red chips bets. Lets assume the minimum bet on this table is five units of your chosen currency. The dealer pays the odds bet first as the point is eight and the odds are 6 to 5 for that number. So the odds bet behind the line will be paid six units of currency. The bet on the line is  paid even money. Next they pay the blue chips even money. The white chips has full odds the bet behind the line will be paid twelve units of currency and the chips on the line even money. The odds for the other numbers are as follows;the 6 & 8 odds 6 to 5,the 5 & 9 odds 2 to 3  and the 4 & 10 odds 2 to 1. These odds for the four and ten are the truest odds in the casino, as there are only two ways of making those numbers with a pair of die.

The second contract bet the don’t win don’t pass bar/line. Unfortunately I was unable to find any pictures showing bets on the don’t bets without any people in them so will use the previous picture and scenario.

On the come out roll the first roll of the dice by a player the don’t win don’t pass bar/line bets win if two or twelve are the result of the first roll and are paid even money.  If three is the result the bet stands off and may be removed, the value changed or moved onto the win line.

However, if the result is eight as in the picture above these bets will win only if the player rolls a seven before rolling the point number eight. If you can imagine the win/pass line bets above moved onto the don’t win don’t pass bar/line. The players of these bets can still have odds but here they must lay or give rather than take the odds. So the player with the red chips must place a bet of six units of currency to win five units and his original bet be paid even  money. The player with the white chips would need to bet twelve units to receive ten units and his original bet be paid even money, and of course the player with the blue chips is neither taking or giving odds. If the player rolling the dice rolls a seven the base dealer/croupier collect the losing bets then payout the don’t win don’t pass bar/line bets. Again paying the odds bet first and even money to the original bet. When laying/giving the odds for the numbers the values are reversed 6 & 8 5 to 6, 5 & 9 2 to 3 and the 4 & 10 1 to 2.

This is the basic craps/dice game or seven/eleven as it was called in back street games of the 1920’s and 30’s.

How to Play Roulette

How to play the game of roulette. If you are playing in a casino or on-line there are usually areas where you can learn the game.

As training dealers/croupiers was always one of my most rewarding jobs when I worked in casinos, teaching people through this blog maybe rewarding for me and you the reader I hope. The game is played with a ball usually a type of very hard plastic occasionally you still hear ivory balls a wheel with 37 equal compartments numbered 0-36. The 0 referred to as zero has a green background colour. The numbers 1-36 having either a red or black. background. In the picture below left the wheel is a single zero European wheel. The first thing most people notice is the numbers are randomly scattered bearing no relation to the linear numbered roulette cloth on the table.

Some wheels in America have a double zero creating 38 compartments and changing the payout structure of the game. However, the wheel shown here is the one I have seen most on my travels around the world.

The dealer/croupier spins the wheel in one direction and the ball in the opposite direction. Only they have control over the pace of the wheel or ball in legal casinos.

Arranged around the wheel on the dealer/croupier side of the table will be a number of coloured chips. Each set of different coloured chips is referred to as a bank of colour and usually contains 200 chips of that colour. They are set out in stacks of 20 chips so each bank should have ten stacks. These are given to players in exchange for cash at the table minimum unless the players request a higher value. At the rear of the dealer/croupiers, area will be the cash chips. Use for people playing outside bets and for making-up payments when there is not enough of the players colour chip in the bank of colour, or for cashing out the colour chips of players when they wish to leave the table. Usually bye the wheel on the player’s side of the table you find the table minimum/maximum signage.

I will use the roulette cloth below to illustrate the odds and terms for the bets.

Straight up pays 35-1   Minimum Bet 1 Maximum Bet 100

Split pays           17-1   Minimum Bet 1 Maximum Bet 200

Corner                 8-1   Minimum Bet 1 Maximum Bet 400

Street                  11-1   Minimum Bet 1 Maximum Bet 300

Sixline                  5-1   Minimum Bet 1 Maximum Bet 600

Dozens                 2-1   Minimum Bet 5 Maximum Bet 300

Column                2-1   Minimum Bet 5 Maximum Bet 300

Even Chance        1-1   Minimum Bet 5 Maximum Bet 500

We will assume the minimum bet is 1 chip at both the table minimum bet, and the currency minimum unit so $1-$100 or £1-£100. You will notice the minimum bet on number and number combinations are less than for the 2-1 and even money bets.

In the event of zero coming in on a spin the 2-1 chances columns and dozens all lose and the 1-1 even chance bets lose half there stake. This is a part of the house edge for the game.

To play American Roulette you will require your stakes and an idea of how much you want to win. Let us say you have stakes of 100 of your chosen currency. How much would you expect to win? Bare in mind roulette can deliver very high returns. Once you have set your limits stick to them, especially your spend limit you will also need a table to play at.

If we play at the table above you could have a hundred bets placing, the minimum bet each spin or playing the outer bets the 2-1’s and 1-1’s you could have 20 bets. I think placing one bet per spin would bore me but you would spend sometime at the table.

To me roulette is rather like a lottery so I would usually advise people to play it for minimum stakes and similar expectations.

However, there are bets that can help cover the numbers of the wheel. In the picture of the wheel there are four sections highlighted. We will leave the Jeu 0 for now and concentrate on the three other sections.

Voisin du Zero also known as the Zero section as you can see covers the numbers of the wheel from 22 to 25. That is 17 of the 37 numbers on the wheel. It is skewed to the left of Zero as you look at it. Nine numbers on the left of Zero and seven numbers to the right. Opposite this we have the Tiers du Cylindre sometimes called the (Grand Cylindre du Tiers) but commonly called the Tier. It contains a total of 12 numbers from 27 to 33 a third of the total numbers of the wheel and is skewed to the right. The last section the orphelins often called the Orphans, and is split in two covering the numbers between the two larger sections of the wheel on the right and left. This sections contains nine numbers five numbers on the left side of the wheel and four numbers on the left side of the wheel.

These section bets are recognised bets that can be placed by you or the dealer/croupier, though usually if you wish the dealer to place the bet most casinos would ask that you give the bet to the dealer/croupier before the ball is spun. If you do ask for the bets they have a common value and number of chips involved. Although if specified they can be placed en-plan/straight-up this changes the number of chips and the value of the bet.

The Zero section is commonly a nine chip bet, the Teir a six chip bet and the Ophans a five chip bet. That’s twenty chip and if you remember from earlier twenty chips is a stack. So you have covered every number on the wheel all 37 with just one stack of chips. If this seems good value take a look below at the table with the bets placed on it. Only two bets and five numbers will return you more than you have laid out. Number one in the Orphans is a straight up and pays 35-1. Number 17 in the same section has two splits each paying 17-1 so you get 34 chips back. Zero, Two and Three in the zero section are covered by two chips at 11-1 so you get back 22 chips. These section are recognised by regular players of the game and you may find they bet more on certain numbers within the section. They are of course recognised by the house and can result in the dealer/croupier being changed if they become stuck in one section for to long.

Another set of bets are also used the Finales that is every number on the table ending say with a four, which would be 4,14,24,34 so would be a four chip bet. The same is true for  0-4, then three chip bet for the numbers 7-9. Of more use to the regular roulette gamblers are the neighbour bets. Usually two number either side of a specific number but some players use four numbers either  side. So if I used zero and ten from opposite sides of the wheel. Zero and four numbers either side are 3,26,0.32,15 a five chip bet. Ten for the four either side would be 33,16,24,5,10,23,8,30,11 a nine chip bet.

My Casino Games

When I first started out in casino’s here in the UK there were four what we call table games, which the house operated and therefore had a built-in percentage for the house to make money. A quick look on Wikipedia came up with 28 games the majority of them card games. Firstly, back to basic’s the four games available when I first entered a casino.

American roulette. A wheel with 37 compartments numbered from 0-36 the zero coloured green the numbers 1-36 equally divided into red and black.

Blackjack. Played with four or six decks of 52 cards. Nowadays played mainly with six decks.

Baccarat. Played with six decks in the original version with no numbers in the corners just the number of that suits symbols.

Dice/Craps. Played with highly engineered die usually in sets of six from which a player selects two to throw.

Roulette is one of the most observed games going so much has been written about it. So many theories and systems for winning. All have a little substance to them but after 36 years in casino’s I know of none that have broken the bank legally. When I visit, casinos I will usually have a little play if only to see how they operate their game. To my mind, roulette is best played with small stakes on the numbers. I have seen the same column or dozen come up more than five times in as many spins, and the same coloured number many times. I never forgot spinning 17 consecutive black numbers. As a chap doubled his bet only to hit the maximum amount, the tables limit some five spins before I hit a red number. To me it is very much like a lottery.See the “How to Play Roulette” post http://wp.me/p1RuuH-22

Blackjack is nowadays usually dealt from an electro-mechanical shoe. These remove the risk of rare exceptionally talented dealers rigging a shoe. For the majority of dealers they are a pain as now they get no respite in days gone by you could have a bit of a breather whilst shuffling the decks. However, if you have the time, patience and bankroll card counting can still reduce the in-built casino percentage. I play a basic strategy never press if losing and stick if the dealer has 4-6. Never split pairs more than three times. However, I find it a boring game so soon wander off to the bar or cabaret room for a break.

Baccarat this game is rarely seen these days. It has been superceded by a game I know as Punto Banco. In baccarat, the two sides of the table played against the house dealer. Therefore, there would be three hands of cards upon the table. Bets on sides one and two if they won got even money and a good banker (house dealer), would look at the value of bets on each side of the table and judge whether he would draw another card, if in a position where he had an option to draw. Lets say the value of bets on side one was 1000 and on side two 500. If he judge the card he dealt to side one had not improved their hand, and his hand was strong enough he could stay expecting to beat side one. If he did beat, side one but not side two the money from side ones losing bets would pay the winners on side two and make a profit for the house. The game I see played today and know as Punto Banco has side one playing against side two so just two hands of cards. If the bank hand wins it is paid at 19-20 if the player hand wins it is paid even money. So again a boring game to my mind.

Dice/Craps this is my favourite casino game there is just so much to it. However, if we just take the basics for now the win line and do not win line. Logic computer simulations everything is telling you the do not win line is favourite. Yet I still play the win line when it is my turn to throw the dice. Perhaps appealing to the idea, we all love a winner. This bet will only pay on the first roll of the dice if you roll seven or eleven, you lose on 2, 3 and twelve straight away three losers to two winners. The don’t win will be paid on the 3 and the 12 but stand-off on the 2. If the first number is, 4,5,6,8,9,10 then this number must be rolled again before the win line bets are paid. If seven is rolled they will lose and the don’t win line is paid before, the dice pass to the next player around the table. 4,5,6,8,9,10 these numbers are known as the point if you have a bet on the win or don’t win line you can increase your wager by taking or giving the odds. By which I mean you place more money/chips down. If we use the four and ten as an example. These two numbers can only be made in two ways with a pair of dice. The four must be 2 and 2 or 3 and 1, the ten 5 and 5 or 6 and 4. Here are the truest odds in the casino if you take the odds you place an additional bet up to the amount you have on the win line this bet will be paid at odds of 2-1. If you are on the don’t win line you give the odds and the bet is paid at 1-2. These days there are many more bets introduced and I will return to these and strategies of playing another time. “How to play Craps/Dice” http://wp.me/p1RuuH-2m

As I am no longer employed and my reserves are fast disappearing, I naturally look to make savings but without giving up to many principals. If you consider principals a luxury then I am guilty of holding on to some luxuries.

March this year was the first significant point it marked a full year unemployed. I had my first attempt at changing a utility company it was the electricity supplier Eon. They had sent out a letter in February saying I should increase my monthly payment and backed it up with e-mail then a phone call. The phone call had been a bad idea on their part. Sat with my laptop in front of me delving into my online account with the company. While the salesman did his thing, I was well armed with questions for the invitation when it came at the end of his speech for any questions.

I was fairly well aware he would not be able to give me any concrete answers after all he was a salesman not a negotiator. However, I let him have it anyway first I pay you £50:00 per month up front by Direct Debit (DD). My highest usage months the winter I rarely go over £59:00 per month. My summer month’s lowest usage the costs are £35:00 per month. The excess sitting in your company’s bank account earning your company interest and not sitting in my bank account earning me interest. Currently you want me to increase my DD by £10:00 per month to £60:00 per month yet after the latest bill my account shows a credit of £19:64 sat earning interest for your company. Admitting to being lost for words, he apologised for calling and wished me a nice day.

I went to a comparison web site to check out the rates of other electricity providers. It seemed once initial deals came off and the extent of contract there was little difference. Also I knew there was another round to energy pricing to come over the summer for a change this one had been flagged up early thanks to the call from the salesman. Sure enough further increases were added over the summer months by all the utility companies.

It seemed before I knew it I had been unemployed for eighteen months.  Obviously, that was August this year and the electricity company tried again no phone call though this time, just an e-mail and a letter telling how the increases would affect me. Oddly enough a £10:00 per month increase. I returned to the comparison websites, found a deal, and contract term that suited me £50:00 per month DD annual renewal. Therefore, I think I may have won that round.

I am still struggling with the description of these companies as utility companies I would much rather call them energy companies. We all understand useful, of use and these large companies seem to be at odds with these descriptions. Then going through a final summer clear out before entering hibernation for the winter. I came across an old economics paper with the economic theory description of utility I had written down but omitted to remember as may path lay elsewhere. In economic theory, utility is the amount of satisfaction or pleasure that somebody gains from consuming a commodity, product, or service.  Not the product or services’ actual usefulness.

These types include the professional gambler, social gambler, serious gambler, compulsive gambler, escape gambler and the antisocial gambler

Professional gamblers for whom gambling is their primary source of income. He or she gambles in a planned manner, and rarely loses control while gambling. They are disciplined, that is why they are ready to accept losses and do not chase to win them back. They do not bet compulsively, and they consider their strategies before making their bets.

I would take issue with this, whilst they may make an income over a period it is rarely sustainable over a working lifetime of say fifty years.

Social gamblers see gambling as recreational, source of entertainment, and not their source of income. They are infrequent players, but some of them play regularly, but within considerable spaces of time. They do not get frustrated if they were not able to play. Most gamblers are considered to fall on this type.

In general, I would agree but the second part of the statement does not ring true. They are equally capable of being regular players or irregular players who go on a gambling binge.

Serious gamblersmake gambling a vital part of their life. Unlike social gamblers who would not mind missing a game, the serious gamblers would be upset if they do not get to play. Although they are serious players, they are not caught in financial trouble due to gambling. Like professional gamblers, they do not chase losses, but unlike the professionals, they do not depend on gambling winnings to pay for their necessities. The serious gamblers still have other non-gambling activities that they engage in.

Again this is to simplistic in terms of how they are measured against their nearest group. The serious gambler may mind missing a game or a round of betting. Yes like the professional, they are not in financial trouble. Yet! They will research their strategies and profit/loss situation and if in control not chase their losses.

Compulsive gamblersregard gambling as the sole important thing in life. They forget other aspects in life such as career and family. They find themselves in financial problems due to gambling, and use the money dedicated to more important things to support their hobby. Vice versa, they depend on their winnings to pay for their necessities. They have strong urges to gamble, and could not quit gambling easily.

I would add here that though gambling is their main addiction along the way other addictions will have been in evidence. Like alcoholics, they try to be secretive about their addiction. Lying readily to themselves and anyone who may suspect they have a problem.

Escape or Relief gamblers use gambling as their escape from problems or troubles in life. Instead of turning to family, friends or organisations for relief. These gamblers would prefer gambling to forget about their worries. Although gambling may be a good stress reliever, the effect it offers is short-lived and once the euphoria, of the gamble is over the problems come back, and the escape/relief gamblers are more depressed than ever.

These types are often hardest to define as you can see many other gambling traits in them.

Now what type of gambler am I? I do bet most days of the week usually on football games occasionally on horses. I will pass an hour or three in the evenings playing poker. All the time risking nothing more than points.

The drugs well lets start with brain chemicals dopamine and noradrenaline. This work on the neurotransmitters noradrenaline known as Epinephrine and is a hormone. It works on the nervous system in the fight flight responses.

Dopamine is a neurohormone and has many functions in the brain and it seems one of them may be reward/ punishment predictor. When we get a child or animal to perform a task and relate that learning to a reward.

Man made drugs will have their normal effects of heightening or decreasing these hormone levels of the bodies own drugs. Possibly the most constant companion man-made drug to gambling is alcohol and it can be your worst enemy. Alcohol changes your risk perception irrespective of your normal attitude toward risk. We all know of friends who become emboldened by drinking and those who become depressed again changing the risk perception. Therefore, alcohol needs to be moderated when gambling. So gambling is a risky business and drugs increase the risk whether produced by the body or manufactured.

Now can the risk be reduced whilst still producing levels of euphoria and depression without financial risk? The answer of course is yes. Just learning a game and winning gives you a high or a low irrespective of any gambling wagers on the game.

There are many sites out there offering free-play options, from online casino sites to social network sites such as face-book. Of course the aim of all this is to draw the user into to the hard gambling side of the business where they make their profits. So it comes down to you. Can you exercise control? Can you accept gratification just from the act of winning, and accept losing with a shrug of the shoulders and knowing you lost nothing. Perhaps in that scenario receiving a low followed by a slight high we call relief.
